Sep 16, 2025 #MediaLiteracy #EnvironmentalEducation #CriticalThinking What Is The Ethical Response To Climate Change Misinformation? Have you ever wondered how misinformation about climate change impacts our efforts to protect the planet? In this informative video, we'll explore the ethical responses to climate change misinformation and how they can help us make better decisions. We'll start by explaining why spreading false claims about climate change is harmful and how it creates confusion and delays in implementing necessary policies. We'll discuss effective strategies like preemptive inoculation, which involves teaching people to recognize misinformation before they believe it, and culturally sensitive communication that respects different values and beliefs. You'll learn how transparency about motives behind false claims can foster healthy skepticism, and why engaging communities through open discussions is essential for democratic participation. We’ll also cover the importance of balancing regulation with respect for free speech and how promoting scientific consensus builds trust. Additionally, we'll highlight practical actions such as educational programs, media literacy campaigns, and fact-checking services that help combat misinformation.
Whether you're an environmental advocate, educator, or concerned citizen, understanding how to respond ethically to climate misinformation is vital for creating a healthier planet. When playwright David Finnigan launched a new play in 2014, controversially titled "Kill Climate Deniers," he was not prepared for the blowback. But the conversations with climate skeptics of all stripes ultimately taught him a fascinating lesson about how many of us think about — and act upon — the climate crisis. (Recorded at TED2024 on April 17, 2024)
Jul 1, 2024 #BBCWorldService #climatechange #WorldService Nobel Prize laureate Sir Paul Nurse wants science, not politics, to guide the debate surrounding climate change. But how do you convince the denialists? Babita Sharma takes us through the evolving strategies of those who claim climate change isn’t real, and speaks to two young people who are trying to make a difference. UK climate activist Phoebe L Hanson founded Teach the Teacher, which gives school children the resources to engage with their teachers on climate change. Ugandan Nyombi Morris set up a non-profit organisation, Earth Volunteers, to mobilise young people like him who wanted to promote the fight against the climate crisis.

Anjali Appadurai recounts a profound realization during a focus group with a young mother, highlighting her guilt over her contribution to climate change despite limited choices. The talk delves into the historical deception by petroleum companies regarding climate science and introduces the concept of "the new climate denial," acknowledging climate change but advocating for more fossil fuels. The speaker urges viewers to challenge this denial by envisioning bold climate solutions that benefit society as a whole. By rejecting incremental solutions and embracing transformative action, the talk inspires hope for a sustainable future, emphasizing the need for collective action to combat the climate crisis and create a better world for future generations. Anjali Appadurai is a climate justice organizer and campaigner. As a young activist, she worked with youth movements from around the world to build a strong civil society voice at the UN Climate Convention and to ensure that social movements' demands were heard in the halls of power. She runs the Padma Centre for Climate Justice, a project that brings together diasporic communities to build power around issues of climate and economic justice, and she works as Campaigns Director at the Climate Emergency Unit. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
Jan 25, 2024 The fossil fuel and petrochemical industry in the Louisiana area that has come to be known as “Cancer Alley” has devastated the health, lives, and environment of residents, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. Cancer Alley refers to an approximately 85-mile stretch of communities along the banks of the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, where communities exist side by side with some 200 fossil fuel and petrochemical operations.
The 85-page report, “‘We’re Dying Here’: The Fight for Life in a Louisiana Fossil Fuel Sacrifice Zone,” documents how residents of Cancer Alley suffer the effects of extreme pollution from the fossil fuel and petrochemical industry, facing elevated rates and risks of maternal, reproductive, and newborn health harms, cancer, and respiratory ailments. Parts of Cancer Alley have the highest risk of cancer from industrial air pollution in the United States. These harms are disproportionately borne by the area’s Black residents

Human rights are intimately linked with climate change because of its effect on not just the environment but our own well-being. Its effects will continue to grow and worsen over time, creating ruin for current and future generations. This is why the failure of governments to act on the climate crisis in the face of overwhelming scientific evidence may well be the biggest inter-generational human rights violation in history.
