Deep beneath the waves, a powerful yet invisible system has been silently regulating life on Earth for thousands of years. It's rarely talked about, barely understood by most, and yet its sudden collapse could reshape the world as we know it.
Why is it weakening now? What happens if it stops altogether? And how could something so critical remain hidden for so long?
Jun 28, 2024 "What Could Go Wrong"? The Salada Institute at Harvard. "Climate Action Week"
Most predictions of the impacts of climate change on society depend on climate models, but these models are calibrated on the modern climate, and often neglect critical components of the climate system that can greatly exacerbate how climate change will proceed, particularly at a local scale. Four climate scientists - from climate physics, hydrology, ecology and epidemiology - shared where they see gaps in our current understanding, and where they believe we may be underestimating the risk of severe climate shocks. The conversation - while dark - helps to inform how we can protect ourselves against some of these risks in the future.
